SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY -- HISTORY

According to Dr. Raymond Starr, in his book San Diego State University: A History in Word and Image (San Diego: San Diego State University Press, 1995), the school became officially known as San Diego State University on January 1, 1974. For a brief time (1972-1974), its name was officially changed to California State University, San Diego, after having been known as San Diego State College since 1935 (Starr, 187 and 91). Malcolm A. Love, for whom our library is named, was the institution's president at the time of the name change. During his presidency, he had fought for the name change from "college" to "university" in part because he felt that the school had evolved into a major comprehensive institution in the 1960s.

SDSU's Library and Information Access houses three copies of Dr. Starr's book: one in the general stacks in the Oversize/fo Section of the Library and Information Access (Call number: Oversize/fo 4th LD729.6.S3 S73 1995), which can be checked out, one in the Reference Section (LD729.6.S3 S73 1995 c.2 - LIB USE ONLY) , and one in Special Collections that can be used only in our reading room.
