ANCIENT AZTEC NAMES OF RESIDENT HALLS

Chapultepec: Refers to a stately forest through which the Aztecs arrived at the site of the Tenochtitlan. It is a Nahuatl word which means literally, “the hill of the grasshopper.”

Maya: Contributed the calendar, writing, a college of mathematics and astronomy, and corn agriculture.

Olmeca: Developed unique art in use of jade, and huge monuments. Enjoyed games using balls made of rubber.

Tarastec: Were expert weavers of embroidery and feathers and made turquoise and mosaic ornaments. They were known for their humor.

Tenochca: Is synonymous with the people. Tenoch was a leader of the Aztec Empire and led the people into the valley where Mexico City is now located.

Toltec: Were master builders of a large model city and religious center. They were skilled at pottery work and corn cultivation.

Villa Alvarado: Represents the name of one of the old Aztec “golden cities.”

Zapotec: The Zapotec honored higher education, architecture and worked with copper and gold. The culture honored religion and the priesthood.

Zura: Ancient meaning is mysterious; may mean a dove or pigeon.
