Any time you are researching a company, you want to also research the industry (or industries) it competes in, so you can measure your company's performance against the industry as a whole. Industry research is much more an art than a science. First, defining what an industry is is problematic. The word "industry" refers to a group of firms that produce similar products and/or services, and that is about as specific as you can get. Is Goodyear in the tire industry or the automobile industry? (Or the blimp industry?) Second, where does one industry begin and another end? Third, are you researching an industry or a product/service? Many times the answers to these questions depend on the purpose of your research.
