HOLIDAYS AND FESTIVALS

Occasionally students must research a holiday, folk custom, or festival in another culture. Some popular topics are Oktoberfest , Carnival, and Mardi Gras. The Running of the Bulls, held in Pamplona, Spain, is described in a number of places, including articles in Ebsco, JSTOR, and the Hemingway novel The Sun Also Rises.

Try Holidays or Festivals in the PAC. Sometimes looking for books on a particular country (Germany, Spain, etc.) works for this assignment (especially with subdivisions like Festivals, Holidays, or Social Life and Customs).

The Call Number range GT 3925-3930 in Ref seems to have a number of references works that might be helpful, such as Holidays, festivals, and celebrations of the world dictionary : detailing more than 2,000 observances from all 50 states and more than 100 nations (Ref. GT3925 .T46 1997). Another good book is Religious holidays and calendars (Ref CE6 .R45 1998).

Encyclopedias (see http://infodome.sdsu.edu/research/guides/vrd.shtml#encyclopedias) are also helpful.

The Internet can be useful (see http://www.holidayfestival.com/ or http://www.holidays.net/ or http://lii.org/search/file/holidays) but some instructors do not allow students to use the Web.

Article databases: see JSTOR, ProQuest, Ebsco, Ethnic NewsWatch, Sociological Abstracts, Readers Guide Retrospective, MLA Bibliography, or Historical Abstracts.

Travel guides can also be useful. (Use the subdivision "Guidebooks" after country name).
