look up topic and use LC subheadings "law and legislation" or "legal status, laws, etc." - these can be subdivided by geography (e.g. United States) and/or history

Article databases
Various databases will be useful, depending on the topic. Two databases that might be useful for many topics are American History and Life and PAIS. Newspaper articles can also be useful.
Compilations of laws
We do have some books that are compilations of the laws on a given topic. These can be found using LC subject headings (e.g. Drugs -- Law and legislation -- United States) or word search (they usually include the word "compilation"). These are generally the actual laws, not analyses.
