Printing from Blackboard

.xls Excel file

  • No known problems.
  • Link automatically opens a new window.
  • Print using browser File.

.pdf Adobe Acrobat file

  • Most files are okay to print, but large files may be slow.
  • Link automatically opens a new window.
  • Print using one of 3 options
    • browser File
    • browser printer icon
    • Adobe Acrobat printer icon.

.doc Word file (File Download window)

  • Document opens in Blackboard frames. Word viewer and Blackboard do not communicate well for printing. Print jobs do not show-up at print stations. User will need to open a new window to print.
  • From the “Course Documents” Shift-left click on the link to open in a new window.
  • Print using browser File or printer icon.

.html Word file

  • Document opens directly in Blackboard frames.
  • Using the browser File or printer icon sends 2 print jobs; course documents header and the document.
  • There are 2 ways to print just the document:
  1. Click anywhere in the document.
  • Use Print Preview and select Only the selected frame option.
  1. From the “Course Documents” list, shift-left click on the link to open in a new window.

.ppt PowerPoint file

  • Slide show opens in Blackboard frames (black background around slide).
  • Right click to advance slides.
  • Print using the browser File or printer icon. Can only print one slide per page.

From the “Course Documents” list Shift-left click opens a new window.

  • File will be grayed out. There are 2 options for printing:
  1. Use the printer icon.
  2. Right-click and choose Print.

.html PowerPoint file

  • Slide show opens in Blackboard frames (white background around slide).
  • Available options depend on PowerPoint version used to create the file.
  • Can only print one slide per page. Look for “Expand Outline” icon to print contents of all slides as one print job.

Printing same as for .html Word file.

Blackboard and FireFox 3

Per Carol Phillips as of 10 July 2008:

Information shared at IACC today states that Firefox 3 and Blackboard don't get along well. Firefox 3 is not officially supported by Blackboard. Blackboard is recommending users stay with Firefox 2.

Some issues:

Major: Student cannot upload assignments when using Windows or Linux. They will get an error saying "please enter a valid file name". Apparently, the workaround is to move the file to the root "/" directory and then try to upload.

Minor

  1. Some file type are not displayed when uploaded through VTBE.
  2. Firefox 3 crashing while adding the calculated question in tests.
  3. Inconsistent behavior copying surveys.

The Library's image will have Firefox 3. If anyone has a problem using Firefox 3 on our computers, use the IE browser which will be on the image as well. This is also something to consider if you are using Firefox and Blackboard from your home computers.
